How to use this tool

Attribution breaks at the naming stage, not the reporting stage

Property marketing runs across Meta, Google, portal listings, channel partners and offline signage at the same time. When each is tagged by a different person, the same campaign arrives in analytics as 'Meta', 'meta_ads', 'FB' and 'facebook' — four rows that should have been one.

No reporting layer can repair that afterwards. Consistency has to be imposed when the link is created, which is all this tool does.

1. Fix the vocabulary first

Agree the allowed values for source, medium and campaign before anyone builds a link. The list matters more than the format.

2. Put the project in the campaign name

Builders run several projects at once. A campaign name without the project cannot answer the only question the owner asks: which project did this spend fill?

3. Keep it lowercase and hyphenated

Analytics platforms treat Project-Alpha and project-alpha as different campaigns. Casing discipline avoids a split that is invisible until reporting.

Frequently asked questions

What is a UTM parameter?

A tag appended to a URL — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign — that analytics tools read to attribute a visit to a specific campaign. It travels with the click; it does not identify the person.

Do UTM tags work for WhatsApp enquiries?

Only up to the click. Once the conversation moves into WhatsApp the parameters are gone, which is why a pre-filled message identifying the campaign is the more reliable signal there.

Will tagged URLs affect SEO?

Only use UTM parameters on paid, email and partner links you control. Do not put them on internal site links or anything you want indexed — they create duplicate URLs for the same page.
